"You people. Are you Metafire? Don't kill me. Not again. Not again." Then he quietly slumped down a bit, his eyes narrowing and going dead. Then he whispered in exhalation, "But I found something else, somebody else..."

The nurse said, "I think that's it. He's gone for awhile now. It's remarkable how clear he is today. We think he's getting better."

Jill thanked everybody. After hanging up, she turned to Ferguson. "You know, I don't know much about being a real FBI agent, but I don't think he said very much here. I remember using the word 'Metafire' in my first conversation with him."

"No, Jill, it doesn't matter. There is enough here to extend the investigation a bit. How can you explain the way he was pairing his concern about getting killed with Metafire?"

"I don't know that he knows that he was, John," said Jill.

"And what was that about him matter of factly saying that metafire was fire that burned fire. How could he have said that without knowing what he was talking about?" Ferguson was tolerating Jill.
